Stormbreak Independent Winter Guard is a brand-new independent color guard program based in Wisconsin, founded on a passion for performance art and developing young athletes.
Stormbreak is brought to you by coaches with ties to Hamilton High School Color Guard — proud to carry that tradition into the independent circuit. We are organized as a Wisconsin nonprofit organization, committed to providing a high-quality, affordable competitive experience for our members.
Performance art: A blend of dance, movement, and equipment work — flags, rifles, and sabres — performed to music as one unified show.
Indoor season: Winter guard performs indoors on a gym floor with a custom floor tarp, competing from January through April.
Team sport: Like a sport, but scored on artistry, design, and execution. Every member matters — every movement tells the story.
The national governing body for winter guard. MWCGC uses WGI's scoring system and standards — a nationally recognized credential.
One of the Midwest's premier circuits for independent winter guard programs — regional shows leading toward a championship weekend.
We will compete as an Independent A (IA) unit for the 2027 season — receiving scores and commentary while we build our program. Age eligibility: 14–22.
Shows are scored using the WGI system, judged by certified WGI adjudicators.
GE — General Effect: The emotional impact of the show. Does the performance move the audience? Is the story told clearly and powerfully?
DA — Design Analysis: How well is the show designed? Visual programs, staging, music choices — the blueprint of the performance.
E&M — Equipment & Movement: Technical execution — flag and rifle technique, dance quality, body movement, and synchronization across the ensemble.
Scores reflect both the vocabulary of the show (difficulty) and the excellence of its execution — so every member's performance matters.
My name is Jean Loveday, and my husband, Tom, and I have been married for more than 25 years. We have two daughters, Katelyn (Alex), 22, and Samie, 20, along with our two dogs, Dexter, an English Bulldog, and Spencer, our rescue pup.
Outside of color guard, I work as a Senior Strategic Sourcing Analyst for Aurora Health Care, where I have been for more than 13 years. Although I'm a Florida native, Tom and I have proudly called Sussex, Wisconsin, home for over 21 years.
My Color Guard Journey
My color guard experience began in high school, when it was known as drill team and included flags, dance, and kick line. I participated in marching band and indoor guard all four years, serving as squad leader and later captain. During my senior year, I stepped into many coaching and choreography responsibilities, planting the seeds for my future as a coach.
I continued my guard career at Florida State University as a member of the Marching Chiefs Auxiliary. For two years, I performed at football games, bowl games, parades, and other events, creating lifelong memories while developing my skills. I later graduated from FSU with a Bachelor of Science in Business, specializing in Hospitality Administration.

Why I Love Coaching
I have been coaching Sussex Hamilton High School Color Guard since the 2019 marching season. While teaching technique and performance skills is important, what I value most is helping students build confidence, work as a team, discover their potential, and have fun. I love watching students grow as performers and develop skills that extend far beyond the floor or field.
Color guard creates a strong sense of community, teaching students how to support one another, overcome challenges, and celebrate accomplishments together. Those friendships, memories, and life lessons often last a lifetime.
I am also excited to support Samie as she pursues her dream of creating Stormbreak Winter Guard. I look forward to seeing the creativity, dedication, and teamwork this new opportunity will inspire, and I am grateful to be part of the journey.
Hi! I'm Niki Fricano and I'm originally from Sussex, WI but currently live on the East Side of Milwaukee. I performed with the Sussex Hamilton Color Guard all 4 years of high school before attending the University of Minnesota for my undergrad in Civil Engineering. I did not participate in guard in college and actually thought my involvement in guard had come to a close. The universe had other ideas!
After graduating in 2019, I moved back to Wisconsin and volunteered with the band for my youngest sister's senior year. The color guard needed help, so I jumped in, along with Jean. We've been instructors for the Hamilton Color Guard ever since!
I love getting into the weeds with technique and genuinely enjoy the process of cleaning choreography. A strong performance starts with a solid foundation in fundamental skills and technique! I'm excited to join the WGI side of the sport and look forward to being a part of what this group accomplishes!
Outside of Color Guard, I work full time as a Critical Care Paramedic in Milwaukee and love spending time with my husband and cat, reading, and baking. If you're curious how I went from Civil Engineer to Critical Care Paramedic, I'm happy to tell you my story but you'll have to join us because it is much better in person!
I look forward to working with others in SE Wisconsin that are as excited about Color Guard as we are!
Hi, my name is Samie Loveday and I'm the founder and future choreographer for Stormbreak. My guard experience started at Hamilton High School, where I spent four years performing and fell in love with the activity. After graduating, I stayed connected to the guard world by coaching alongside Jean (yes, my Mom) and Niki, which gave me a new appreciation for teaching and sharing my love of guard with the next generation.
Building Stormbreak has meant creating the program from the ground up, from forming it as a nonprofit and drafting bylaws to securing insurance, building a startup budget, and connecting with band directors across Waukesha County to recruit performers. My goal is to give young performers a well-run, welcoming place to grow.
Outside of coaching, I'm currently enrolled at WCTC, working toward my associate degree as an AI Data Specialist. Along with school and guard, I also work full-time at a bakery in Menomonee Falls where I get to spend time making coffee and organizing (in my opinion the best parts of the job). In my free time I also love watching anime, reading manga, puzzling, and scrolling on TikTok.
